First cold

Avery (my 3 month old) has gotten her first cold. :( It's not TERRIBLE. She just has a runny nose, a VERY TINY cough, and a stuffy nose. That's it. NO FEVER. Should I take her to the doctor? My mom said they wouldn't give her anything unless she had a fever since she is so young.

Any advice as to what I should do?

Thanks in advance!

she may have an ear infection, I work in a pediatrics office, and those buggers come with all sorts of the symptoms, none ever the same it seems. If nothing else, you will be reassured that she is okay, and you are doing your best to keep her comfortable. :) hope this helps!
oh my goodness... i didn't even think about that. I had TERRIBLE ear infections as a kid and had to have tubes put in. I will DEFINETLY take her to the dr. THank you!
No problem, it could be nothing, but at the same time, you never know!! :) good luck!!!! *hugs*

Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

I know I usually called the peds office, but in general the same basics seemed to apply, keep them hydrated, (just make sure she eats as much as she wants) Clean the nose out with a nasal aspirator (I like this one, since it won't go all the way up her nose).

Also, ask yourself if it could be allergies if she's not running a fever...personally I usually don't get sick unless I've got an allergy attack opening the door and causing problems...

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

she's got that yellow/green junk coming out of her nose, so I don't THINK it could be allergies.
It's funny you say that (your disclaimer) my oldest is almost 8 and that's why I have to ask... it's been SO long I don't even remember!: )

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

And so much seems to have changed since then, that's the worst part! You feel like and idiot/dinosaur...at least I'm starting to...and I don't even HAVE my second child yet!!

Yeah, yellow/green is almost always infection...

In my experience (travels through doctors offices):
Clear = healthy/normal
White/puffy = Allergies
yellow = start of infection and/or blood in the mucus OR mucus that has stagnated for a bit, if it's not consistently yellow (or worse) just monitor it.
green = infection
brown = Didn't you already GO to the doctor?
Black = WoW! You're one of a small subset of people who develop a fungal infestion in their sinuses! Congratulations! You're a winner! ...and in need of surgery, antibiotics/antifungals, steriods and large amounts of allergy therapy...

:D

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

sorry if i've already replied to this... i'm having computer problems today...

i know what you mean... i feel like a dinosaur too!

OMG, I would freak out if I saw black stuff coming out of her nose!:)

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

LOL! The black takes YEARS to develop, and bad, mostly untreated, allergies. Let's put it this way, none of the doctors who dealt with me had EVER seen or heard of it in in anyone younger than thier 40's. I was 22.

:) So yeah, I'm a poster kid for NOT ignoring your kids allergies. Although my parents just weren't aware that anything could really be done about my allergies...

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

oh how terrible. I'm so sorry.

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

:) I survived just fine...now I just make sure to take antihistamines whenever I start ANYTHING resmbling allergies or a cold...

Re: Disclaimer - My daughter is 5 years old next month, so it's been a while...

well that's good you have it under control... when I was one years old(my 1st christmas) my mom and dad got a real christmas tree and learned the hard way I was allergic to it. I spent 1/2 my X-mas in the ER. I still can't have a real one... I've tried, but it just doesn't turn out good.
